What is a cold joint in tarmac paving?
A cold joint is the seam or edge where newly laid tarmac meets an existing surface or an earlier day's paving work, typically weaker than surrounding asphalt due to temperature loss and poor adhesion.
A cold joint forms where fresh tarmac is laid against an existing edge or the border of previously laid material. This happens during multi-phase work on driveways, car parks, and roads when laying cannot be completed in a single pass. The joint is called "cold" because the new material loses heat and fails to bond properly with the older surface beneath or beside it.
Cold joints become vulnerable points for several reasons. When tarmac cools, it contracts away from the edge it was meant to fuse with, leaving a visible seam. Water infiltrates this gap and freezes in winter, forcing apart the two layers. Traffic stress concentrates at the weak bond line, causing the new surface to crack, rut, or fracture away from the existing edge. Contractors prevent cold joints by scarifying or heating the old surface before laying new material, ensuring the new tarmac bonds across the full contact area.
