What is Indian sandstone?

Indian sandstone is a sedimentary stone quarried in India and imported as flagging material for garden paths, patios, and terraces. It arrives as riven (split) slabs, which give the surface an uneven, textured finish rather than a smooth plane. This natural cleft creates both visual interest and practical slip resistance underfoot.

The stone's appeal lies in its colour variation. Individual slabs contain bands of warm ochres, rust reds, terracotta, browns, and softer greys, often within a single piece. This natural variation means no two slabs look identical, creating organic, layered visual effects when laid as paving. The tone and intensity shift subtly across a finished surface rather than presenting uniform colour.

Thickness varies by supplier and product range, typically between 20mm and 40mm, allowing flexibility for different applications and ground conditions. The riven texture means the stone sheds water reasonably well without deliberate fall or slope, though weathering and moss growth over time can darken the surface and soften its warm tones.

Because it is imported and labour-intensive to extract and transport, Indian sandstone carries a moderate material cost relative to other natural stone options.
