What is a whacker plate (plate compactor)?

A whacker plate is a motorized, hand-held compaction tool that uses rapid downward force to compress soil, gravel, and paving bed materials during construction.

A whacker plate, also called a plate compactor, is a petrol or diesel-powered machine with a flat metal base plate that vibrates or pounds downward at high frequency. Operators guide it across a work area by holding handles attached to the main body. The engine powers a compaction mechanism underneath, creating thousands of impacts per minute that force materials tightly together.

In block paving work, whacker plates compress two critical layers: the sub-base (typically crushed stone or scalpings laid 100-150 mm deep) and the sand or mortar bed that sits directly under the blocks. Proper compaction at each stage prevents settlement, reduces voids that trap water, and creates a stable foundation. Without adequate compaction passes, blocks can sink unevenly, create trip hazards, and allow water to penetrate and damage the structure beneath.

Most contractors use plates weighing 50-80 kg for residential and small commercial jobs. The tool moves forward under its own vibration; operators simply maintain control and overlap each pass slightly to ensure full coverage. Multiple passes are standard practice: the sub-base typically needs three to five passes depending on material type and thickness, while the bedding layer needs one to two passes before blocks are laid. The density achieved is measurable and often specified in contract documents or local standards.
